Marcus Aurelius wrote the Meditations in private, in Latin, at night, on campaign. No audience. No publication. No intention of anyone ever reading it. Just a man arguing with himself about what kind of man he was going to be when no one was watching.

Two thousand years later his words are still in print. Still being read by men who have never heard of the Danube frontier, men who have never commanded an army, men who have no idea what it cost him to write what he wrote. They read it anyway because it's true in the way that very few things are, not clever, not inspirational, not motivational. Just true.
