The Norse didn't conquer the world. They moved through it on their own terms. The Celts held ground that Rome spent centuries trying to take and never fully did. The Saxons built a culture so rooted in honor and fate that their words, wyrd, worth, bold, stark, are still in our mouths a thousand years later. The Gauls terrified Julius Caesar, who was not a man easily terrified. They were something older and in some ways harder, men who had not yet decided that comfort was the point, who measured themselves against nature and weather and each other and found that the standard produced something Rome spent centuries trying to defeat.
