The History behind the design

He was plowing his field when they came to find him.

Rome was in crisis. An enemy army had trapped a Roman force in the hills and the city was exposed. The Senate had exhausted its options. So they sent messengers across the Tiber to a small farm, where a man named Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus was working his land.

They offered him absolute power. Dictator of Rome, the highest emergency authority the Republic could grant. He could do anything he wanted with it.

He set down his plow, put on his toga, and got to work.

Sixteen days later it was over. The enemy was defeated, the Roman soldiers were freed, the crisis was resolved. Cincinnatus called the army together, gave a short speech, resigned his dictatorship, and went back to his farm.

He didn't hold onto it. He didn't leverage it. He didn't build a monument to himself or extend his term or find a reason to stay. The job was done. He went home.

Washington read this story. The Society of the Cincinnati, named for this man, counted among its members the officers who won the American Revolution and then, remarkably, gave the power back.

The man on this shirt isn't a conqueror. He's something harder to find and harder to be, the man who answers when called, does what needs doing, and returns to his life without making it his identity.

Called. Served. Returned.
