They knew something the Romans didn't.
When the legions of Rome pushed north into the great Germanic forests, something changed in the men. Veterans of a hundred campaigns, men who had held the line at the edge of the known world, stopped at the tree line. The forest swallowed sound. It swallowed light. It swallowed three entire legions at Teutoburg in 9 AD and gave nothing back. Rome never fully recovered. Rome never fully went back.
The Celtic and Germanic warriors who lived in those forests didn't fear them. The woods were sacred ground, the dwelling place of their gods, the bones of their ancestors, the source of everything that made them who they were. The knotwork didn't decorate their world. It described it. Everything connected. Everything eternal. The living and the dead woven together like roots beneath the forest floor.
The skull isn't a warning. It's an ancestor. He has been in these woods longer than Rome has existed. He will be here long after Rome is dust.
