The History behind the design
In 508 BC, the Etruscan army of Lars Porsena marched on Rome.
The Roman legions broke and ran. The only thing standing between the invaders and the city was a wooden bridge, the Pons Sublicius, and the time it would take to destroy it. Someone had to hold the far end while the engineers worked behind him.
Publius Horatius Cocles walked the wrong direction.
He took position at the bridge entrance with two companions and held the Etruscan advance. When the bridge was nearly down his companions were ordered back across. Horatius stayed. One man, alone, at the entrance of a collapsing bridge, facing an army.
When the bridge finally fell into the Tiber behind him, Horatius, wounded, in full armor, jumped into the river and swam to the Roman bank.
He survived. Rome survived.
They erected a statue of him in the Forum. They granted him as much land as he could plow in a single day. His name has been remembered for 2,500 years.
Not because he won. Because he didn't move.
