The History behind the design

He wasn't American-born. John Paul Jones was a Scottish merchant sailor who came to the colonies with nothing but his name, and even that he'd changed. He had no navy behind him, no tradition to draw from, no institutional weight to throw around. What he had was an absolute refusal to be outfought.

When the Revolution came, he took whatever ships Congress could spare, undermanned, undergunned, outclassed by the most powerful navy in the world, and he went on the offensive anyway. He raided the British coast on their own soil. He terrorized Royal Navy shipping in home waters. He carried the war to the enemy when every advantage belonged to the enemy.

Then came September 23, 1779. The Bonhomme Richard had been fighting HMS Serapis for three hours in the dark off the English coast. Jones's ship was on fire, flooding, and losing. His own crew was calling for quarter. The British captain hailed across the water demanding surrender.

John Paul Jones's answer became the founding statement of the United States Navy.

I have not yet begun to fight.

He wasn't posturing. He was standing on a deck that would be at the bottom of the North Sea by morning. He said it anyway, and then proved it. The Serapis surrendered. Jones transferred his flag from a ship actively sinking beneath his feet and sailed her prize into port.

Every sailor who has served under the American flag has inherited that moment.
