The Romans had a tradition. When a general returned from conquest, riding through the streets of Rome to the roar of the crowd, a slave would stand behind him in the chariot and whisper a single reminder in his ear, that he was mortal. That the glory of the moment meant nothing against the certainty of the end. Not as a curse. As a correction. Even at the height of triumph, the final accounting is the same for every man.
The Stoics understood this better than anyone. Marcus Aurelius. Seneca. Epictetus. They didn't avoid the thought of death, they kept it close deliberately, because they knew it was the clearest lens a man has for cutting through distraction and focusing on what actually matters.
