He was not a warrior in the romantic sense. He was something harder.
The Roman legionary, the miles legionis, was the most disciplined professional soldier in the ancient world. He marched twenty miles a day in full kit. He built a fortified camp every single night, regardless of weather, regardless of exhaustion. He trained constantly, fought in formation, and served for twenty-five years without complaint.
He didn't fight for glory. He fought because the legion required it and he had sworn an oath, the sacramentum, that bound him completely. To the emperor. To Rome. To the men beside him.
When it was over, if he survived, Rome gave him land and citizenship. Most men considered that a fair exchange for a quarter century of their lives.
The legion that forged him is gone. The discipline that defined him isn't.
