Before the longships had names. Before the sagas were written. Before the world had a word for what they were.

There were men in the frozen north who looked at an open ocean, no map, no certainty, no guarantee of return, and launched anyway. Not because they knew what was on the other side. Because staying felt like a smaller death than never knowing.

They crossed the North Atlantic in open boats. They settled Iceland when it was nothing but volcanic rock and wind. They reached North America five centuries before Columbus. They established trade routes from Scandinavia to Constantinople. They became the Varangian Guard, the personal protectors of the Byzantine Emperor. They built legal systems, founded cities, shaped the languages that became English, French, and Russian.

They called themselves NORÐMAÐR. Northman. Not a romantic title, a statement of origin. This is where I am from. This is what made me.

You did not appear from nothing. Somewhere in your line there is a man who crossed something he had no business crossing. Who held when retreat would have been reasonable. Who carried the name forward when letting it die would have been easier.

That inheritance doesn't maintain itself. It requires a man in every generation who takes it seriously.
