The History behind the design
He didn't know anyone was watching over him. That's not how it works.
Psalm 91 is the soldier's psalm. It has been carried into battle on dog tags, tattooed on forearms, folded into chest pockets, and whispered before boots hit the ground for as long as men have gone to war in the name of something worth protecting. It is not a prayer for safety. It is a declaration of trust, the acknowledgment that the man standing watch is not standing alone, whether he feels it or not.
He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust.
The warrior stands beneath something he cannot see. The wings are above him, enormous, deliberate, already spread. He doesn't look up. He doesn't need to. He has already made his decision about what he believes and where he's going. What covers him is not contingent on his awareness of it.
That's the faith of Psalm 91. Not the faith that asks for protection before going. The faith that goes, and trusts that the covering is already there.
For the man who has gone anyway. Who has stood in places where the outcome wasn't guaranteed and felt, afterward, that something had been with him that he couldn't explain.
He shall cover thee. Past tense before it happens. Already done.
