480 BC is not just a date.
It is the year the world you live in was decided. The year Athenian democracy survived. The year the philosophical tradition that produced Socrates, Aristotle, Cicero, and Marcus Aurelius was allowed to continue. The year the entire classical inheritance that Rome later carried forward, and the modern West still lives inside, passed through a narrow coastal pass and came out the other side.
The Spartans didn't know any of that. They weren't fighting for Western civilization. They were fighting because it was their post and they had decided a long time ago that their post mattered more than their lives.
That decision, made by men who would never know what it preserved, is still echoing.
