The History behind the design
Seneca wrote his first letter to Lucilius in the final years of his life. He knew Nero would eventually come for him. He had maybe a few years left, possibly less.
He didn't spend them acquiring anything.
The letter opens with a single instruction: reclaim your time. Stop letting it be stolen by obligation, distraction, and the endless pursuit of more. Most men spend their entire lives accumulating, possessions, status, commitments, opinions, and call it living. Seneca called it waste.
He had watched Rome's wealthiest men die surrounded by everything they owned and nothing they'd actually lived for. He had been one of them. He knew exactly what it cost.
"Stop acquiring and start living."
Not a philosophy. A correction. One he made too late and wanted his friend to make in time.
