The Story

In 83 AD, the Roman general Agricola marched north with 20,000 men. He had already conquered most of Britain. The north was all that remained.

The Caledonian tribes gathered on the slopes of Mons Graupius under a chieftain named Calgacus. Outnumbered. Outequipped. Facing the most disciplined army the world had ever produced.

Before the battle, Calgacus spoke. Tacitus recorded his words, the first Scottish voice in recorded history. He looked at what Rome had done to every people it had ever conquered and said what no one else had dared to put into words:

"They make a desert and call it peace."

The Romans won the battle but they never came back. They built a wall instead.

Calgacus lost the field, but his words have outlasted the empire.
