The History behind the design
In 988 AD, Emperor Basil II needed men he could trust absolutely. Not Byzantine nobles tangled in palace politics. Not soldiers with local loyalties and private ambitions. He needed men from somewhere else, men whose only tie to Constantinople was the oath they swore when they arrived.
He found them in the north.
Norse and Anglo-Saxon warriors who had crossed half the known world, down river routes through Eastern Europe, across the Black Sea, to stand a post in a city that wasn't theirs, for an emperor they'd never met, under a flag that wasn't their own. They called themselves Væringi. Sworn companions. The word didn't mean Viking or warrior or mercenary. It meant one thing: bound by the oath.
They carried the long-handled Dane axe and wore the crimson cloak of the imperial guard. They stood at the Bronze Gate of the Great Palace. They held the line at the Battle of Manzikert. When the emperor was threatened, they were the last thing between him and whatever was coming.
For three centuries they kept the watch. Not for glory. Not for recognition. Because they had sworn to, and that was enough.
Some things don't change.
