The History behind the design
The revolution was dying.
December 1776. Enlistments running out. Men deserting by the hundreds. The Continental Army hadn't won a significant engagement in months. The British knew it. The Loyalists knew it. Most of the colonists knew it.
Washington knew it too.
On Christmas night he loaded 2,400 men into Durham boats and pushed them into an ice-choked river in a northeastern storm. No guarantee they'd make the other bank. No certainty the attack would succeed. No fallback if it didn't.
He issued one order that night. Three words, written on slips of paper passed hand to hand in the dark so officers could identify each other across the water.
Victory or Death.
Not a battle cry. A statement of fact. There was no other option worth considering.
They made the crossing. They took Trenton. They saved the revolution, not because the odds favored them, but because one man decided the alternative was unacceptable.
